| * |
To provide community awareness on substance use and abuse. |
Our program is designed to enhance protective factors and reduce risk factors common to our target population. We will utilize a protocol based on skills training approaches while utilizing a variety of other strategies that have been proven effective (including parental/family components). As the FOCUS program targets the CSAP strategies selective models of prevention curriculums will be implemented. FOCUS program will utilize the Rainbow Days, Inc., Kids, Youth, and Parent Connection by author Cathy Brown, project toward NO drug use. The FOCUS program will implement CSAP strategies as listed:
Prevention Education and Skills Training (Youth and Adult): This strategy is a Key Measure for the FOCUS program. Curriculum based support groups are serviced as pull-out programs within each school site. Participants will attend a six-week session versus the 14-week sessions due to conflicts with the school calendars. Youth ages 5 - 17 and their families will participate in education and skills training that are designed to affect critical life and social skills.
Environmental/Social Policy: Prevention presentations that include minors and tobacco information is a Key Measure for the FOCUS Program. This strategy will aim to influence the incidence and prevalence of abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug. Prevention presentations will be highlighted during Red Ribbon Week and The Great American Smoke Out as well as in school wide presentations.
Community-Based Process: This strategy is a Key Measure. The FOCUS program will utilize this strategy to enhance the ability of the community more effectively to provide prevention. FOCUS program will join efforts of local officials, community, business, spiritual leaders, educators, and other concerned citizens to change attitudes and behavior. When services are coordinated with other agencies, we will maintain letters of agreements.
Information Dissemination: Implementation of this strategy will include but not limited to staff attending local Health and Career Fairs, Weed and Seed festival, as well as other community activities. Written information will be dispersed through presentation and community activities.
Alternative Activities: The FOCUS program will target this strategy by providing alternatives activities designed to help participants master new social skills and develop relationship as well as offset attractions to and fill needs met by ATOD. Activities include but are not limited to the following: Shattered Dreams program, field trips and school wide dances/events.
Program Identification Referral: The FOCUS program will provide this strategy to ensure access to the appropriate level and type of services needed by participants and their families. Staff will refer individuals to the appropriate agencies that best fit their needs.
